Gift giving is in on America’s mind. Black Friday and Cyber Monday bring consumers out in mass looking to jump on that unbelievable deal they can’t pass up. It will be a season filled with joy in giving and receiving. Americans will have others on their mind as they bring delight to the eyes of children and warmth to the heart of friends and family.
This is well and good because in giving and receiving, giving is the greater virtue (Acts 20:35).And the holidays are a prime time for moments of offering oneself to another. As receivers of good gifts, a spirit of gratitude and thanksgiving is appropriate. The Bible says, “Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you” (1 Thess. 5:16-18).
In Scripture, the Apostle Paul was on passionate mission to give. Jerusalem had been overcome by poverty. The saints were in need, along with unbelievers (2 Cor. 9:13). God through Paul saw an opportunity to come to their aid. So, Paul spread the word, writing to Corinth (2 Cor. 9) and telling of their generosity as far north as Macedonia (2 Cor. 9:2).
As Paul brings his discussion of these valiant efforts shared by multiple congregations to a close, he speaks of the exceeding grace of God in the Corinthians (2 Cor. 9:14). Then he states, “Thanks be to God for His inexpressible gift” (2 Cor. 9:15)!
In giving, the greatest gift of all times, all places, and for all people is the gift of Christ Jesus. The gift is “unspeakable” (ASV, KJV), “indescribable” (NAS), and “too wonderful for words” (NLT)! God’s greatest love is expressed God’s greatest gift (John 3:16).
In receiving, the greatest gift one can enjoy is this gift. How wonderful is the gift? John said, “See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God” (1 John 3:1). This love is one of extraordinary degree, a gift beyond words (cf. Matt. 7:11).
In giving and receiving, in this season and every season, all throughout your life and wherever life takes you, be sure to give and receive the greatest gift, Christ Jesus. His life and love are the greatest! Let Him stir your heart and fill your soul. His glory is beyond words!
